Within a short period of time working with Emily, I was able to shift my mindset from trying to force myself to "improve my self-care" and feeling like a failure to offering myself options for change, options for feeling better. That might sound simple but, for me, it was life-changing.

 

When I first starting working with Emily, I was really struggling with my self-care...not only doing it but my approach to trying to do it. I was caught in a painful cycle of setting a self-care goal for myself, not doing it, and then feeling down and like a failure. 

 

So glad to have found a "Self-care Coach", I reached out to Emily with the goal of "improving my self-care". I soon found out that was not where I needed to focus. Emily's approach of working more deeply and directly on my mindset was what I needed. She also offered a very warm, grounded, realistic quality. My 2nd knee replacement recovery was much quicker than the first and I think that Emily's techniques assisted in that quick recovery.

 

"At Home Yoga with Emily was such a treat to myself during my recuperation from my first Knee Replacement Surgery.  My knee itself was doing great but I couldn't get back to walking without back pain.  Over the years, I started to bend over due to my knee pain and when it came to walking I just couldn't seem to increase my steps.

 

Emily was so sweet.  She listened to my complaints and didn't make me feel like a weakling.  Emily taught me some methods from Yoga that helped me stand and relax the back as well as stretching that really helped with strength.  Instead of crying in pain, Emily made me laugh at myself and begin to love life again.

 

What I liked best about working together in my home learning to use the chairs and other household fixtures to support me while working out or just meditating now that I can't kneel to get down on the floor.

 

My three sessions with Emily helped me build strength back so I could have the 2nd Total Knee Replacement on my other knee 4 months after the 1st.  My 2nd knee replacement recovery was much quicker than the first and I think that Emily's techniques assisted in that quick recovery.

"While I had known Emily for years in her capacity as a yoga teacher and public health practitioner, my first person experience with her health coaching started earlier this year. I was really struggling in my PhD program- I was navigating a treacherous advisor relationship, felt overwhelmed by anxiety, and couldn't seem to find a balance between productivity and wellness. I reached out to Emily, because I knew I needed help. I wasn't sleeping peacefully, had trouble focusing on my coursework, and honestly wanted to drop out of my program.

 

At first, Emily and I just talked about how I was feeling. She was able to throw me a few life preservers, which got me through the worst of a long-standing depression. Together, I set goals for daily meditation and yoga- even if only for a few minutes. As the days passed, I noticed my focus re-centering. I didn't feel as overwhelmed by the excessive demands of my advisor, and I started to feel capable of tackling my candidacy exams that were on the horizon.

 

Soon, Emily and I were working together to identify things that brought me *joy* in my work. I felt re-connected with why I was getting my PhD in public health, and I realized that I was both professionally capable and deserving of happiness.

 

It took a lot of work and encouragement, but after a few months of health coaching from Emily I decided to end the relationship with my advisor. It was both one of the hardest and bravest things I think I have ever done. While getting through that "break-up" was incredibly painful, Emily was there with me every step of the way. She supported me in all the self-care I needed to survive such a challenging time.

 

Today, I am taking my candidacy exams, and I feel so confident that I took the time to write this testimonial. I am not exaggerating when I say I wouldn't still be in this PhD program without Emily. She'd be quick to tell I did this all myself, because that's her way. But the truth is I didn't have the tools or the motivation to take care of myself when I was drowning.
