Every year I share a list of holiday self care reminders. This year I want to add something to the list.
You are allowed to pause.
When you’re busy, emotions are running high, and you feel like you need to be in 10 places at the same time, it’s tempting and possibly even automatic to tune out your needs and your body’s signals. Sometimes you do really need to disconnect to put out fires and ensure that everyone is safe. But many times checking in with yourself can be done in just a few moments and can help you take better care of yourself and even your relationships.
You are allowed to pause, even if it’s just for the length of a breath.
Pause and ask, “what do I feel?”
Then, if possible, “what do I need?”
Do you feel hungry? Can you grab a snack as you run out the door so you don’t end up with a headache?
Do you feel overwhelmed? What support do you need? What are you willing to delegate or take off your list?
Do you feel angry? What’s one thing you can say or do to navigate this interaction with integrity?
Do you feel grief? What do you need to make space for your pain in this moment? Do you want to talk or step outside or take a deep breath?
Do you feel achy? What can you do right now, maybe even in the middle of the grocery store, to address the part of your body that’s sending you distress signals?
Do you feel excited or happy or relaxed? Savor that for a second!
Even when it’s inconvenient, even when everyone wants something from you, and even when it feels like there’s no time for it, you are allowed to pause and show up for yourself.
You’re also allowed to give yourself credit for practicing self care! I’ve been hearing from folks as they get bingo on the Holiday Self Care Bingo board. Keep sending your wins my way or on Facebook so I can celebrate with you!
There are new self care and yoga workshops and possibly a series or two in the works, so stay tuned for updates. Meanwhile, thank you for letting me be a part of your 2018. I’m looking forward to connecting in the new year!
